About the Artist

My story

Melissa Hohman with her family

I'm Melissa Hohman — a Texas wildlife artist, and a full-time dental hygienist. My days are split between the dental office and the drawing table, and honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. Both take patience, precision, and a steady hand.

I grew up around South Texas and Hill Country ranch life — the brush country, the wildlife, the hunting culture. Those landscapes and animals are home to me, and drawing them is how I honor that.

Growing up hunting and living close to wildlife gave me a deep respect for animals and the beauty they bring to the world. Over time, that appreciation grew beyond my own backyard, inspiring me to study wildlife from across the globe. My paintings are a way to honor these creatures — capturing not only their form and detail, but their spirit. Through my work, I hope to share the wonder I've carried with me since childhood, and spark that same appreciation for wildlife, near and far.

My process

My signature medium is charcoal powder on canvas — an unforgiving, deeply rich medium that lets me build fur and hide one layer at a time. A single large piece can take many dozens of hours. I work in black and white deliberately: without color, everything comes down to light, texture, and form.

Giving back

Wildlife has given me everything, so I look for chances to give back — from donated pieces benefiting conservation, veterans, and 1st responders to supporting the ranching and hunting heritage that raised me.
